In ancient Rome, cleanliness was highly valued, and public baths and restrooms were provided. However, not all areas had access, leading residents to seek other cleaning methods between visits to these communal spaces.

Romans ingeniously utilized chamber pots for waste collection, notably during nighttime or adverse weather. Urine, or ‘chamber lye,’ was repurposed as an early laundry detergent, with its ammonia content as a bleaching agent.
