Let’s face it. Algorithms run our lives. It’s kind of depressing to think about when we remember the organic discovery of the video rental store. Instead of a streaming service feeding us recommendations it thinks we might like, we could discover new media on our own. There was nothing like walking up and down the aisles of a Blockbuster.

Local video rental stores had the hottest new movies, but they also carried indie films and other movies that we normally wouldn’t see in theaters. It was always so exciting to pick out a few movies to watch over the weekend with a giant bowl of popcorn. If you were lucky, you could score a few new releases.
