GOT What’s Next in Season 8?

Lena Headey (Queen Cersei Lannister)

Cersei Lannister is the Queen of Westeros. She is ruthless, calculative and cunning which is exactly what Westeros needs to survive the looming invasion of the White Walkers and the Knight King as well as other serious threats to the throne. Having been married to King Robert Baratheon for 17 years, she is arguably the most experienced on what must be done to protect the Iron Throne. We know Cersei will not be intimidated to give up power easily. She has proven her ability to survive everything thrown at her. She is a brutal schemer having orchestrated the death of all her rivals. By the end of Season 7, she is already back at the helm after going through insurmountable challenges. She has been humiliated in public and lost three children, but this hasn’t been weakened. In fact, her resolve appears to be stronger. She is also one of the remaining Lannisters.

She is however selfish as seen throughout Game of Thrones earlier seasons. She also faces two strong contenders for the throne namely; Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen who have proven themselves in battle. They have an army and three fire-spitting dragons. Cersei Lannister must do something drastic to remain in power. Will she join forces or take her chances? Let’s focus our attention on one of her bitter rivals;

Emilia Clarke (Queen Daenerys Targaryen)

Daenerys happens to be the strongest female ruler that Westeros is yet to see. She also appears to be the most worthy contender for the throne. She has evolved from a timid and meek girl to being a fierce and merciless force to reckon with. She is also extremely compassionate on some occasions. In her first appearances on Game of Thrones, she is at the mercy of her cruel and controlling brother, Viserys Targaryen. The two are the last surviving members of the Targaryen household which had ruled Westeros for decades before being ousted from power.

In Viserys Targaryen’s quest to recapture power, he trades her sister off to Khal Drogo, the leader of a savage group of warriors, in exchange for an army. Viserys Targaryen needs an army to have a decent chance of recapturing the Iron Throne. After being married off against her will, Daenerys Targaryen sees an opportunity to gain independence from her abusive brother. She orchestrates his death. Unfortunately, her new husband, Khal Drogo is killed, and Daenerys finds herself in trouble again. She is abandoned by Drogo’s men and almost dies of starvation before being held captive by a rival tribe.

Through unmatched resolve, tact and intelligence, she manages to get back on her feet, procure an army and gain superpowers thanks to her three dragons. She has also forged great alliances with the likes of Tyrion Lannister who we will discuss shortly. Tyrion is Queen Cersei Lannister’s brother. He has priceless information about his sister and the throne. He’s also eager to get revenge which makes him a valuable tool to Daenerys as she prepares to take over Westeros.

Daenerys has faced many challenges and emerged victorious. She is occasionally violent and vengeful. Most importantly, she has a keen military mind and three unstoppable dragons. She has a chance to recapture the throne but will she do it when she discovers her lover, Jon Snow is her relative? More on Jon Snow shortly but let’s tackle Tyrion first.

Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister)

Tyrion Lannister is the youngest son of Tywin Lannister. His father, sister Cersei Lannister and brother Jaime Lannister despise him for being a dwarf. Although he enjoys many privileges of being a Lannister from a young age, he feels like an outsider. His abduction for a crime he didn’t commit starts a chain of events that will lead to war. He manages to escape from his abductors and is later appointed by his father Tywin to support King Joffrey Baratheon. He discharges his duties faithfully defending King’s Landing during the Blackwater battle. Instead of getting accolades, he is demoted and framed for King Joffrey’s murder.

Tyrion demands a trial by combat to avoid death. He manages to avoid a death sentence but kills his father out of vengeance, an act which forces him to flee to Essos. He is captured in the east by Jorah Mormont and handed over to Daenerys Targaryen who decides to use him to reclaim the Iron Throne. Tyrion earns Daenerys’s trust and becomes her strategist. He is strategic in helping Daenerys plan to claim the Iron Throne. Season 7 ends when Daenerys is sailing towards Westeros accompanied by her three dragons, new allies, and army. Will Tyrion guide Daenerys to victory? What’s in store for him?

Kit Harington (Lord Jon Snow)

Jon Snow

From infancy, Jon Snow (Aegon Targaryen) is presented as Lord Eddard Stark’s illegitimate son. He is, however, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark (Lord Eddard’s sister), something he is yet to discover. Lord Eddard raises Jon Snow as his own, but his true parentage remains a secret. Jon Snow doesn’t feel fully accepted throughout his life and decides to join the Night’s Watch (an army that guards the wall in the North) to break free from his bastard status.

He manages to rise ranks and become the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch but is later killed in an uprising in the army. A red priestess, Melisandre manages to resurrect Jon Snow and free him from the Night’s Watch. Jon joins forces with his cousin Sansa Stark to build an army which manages to retake Winterfell restoring his dominance in the North.

Jon Snow decides to join forces with Daenerys Targaryen after discovering the White Walkers exist. He does this after being undermined by Cersei Lannister. Cersei isn’t convinced that the real enemies are the White Walkers. Jon decides to pledge his army to Daenerys (Rhaegar’s sister) and steps down. While working together, they become fond of each other and sleep together without realizing they are related. Will Jon try to overthrow Daenerys when he discovers he is the rightful heir to the throne? How will Daenerys react?
