December 2017 Movies: What You Can Look Forward To

If you love movies, there is a lot to look forward to in the next couple of weeks before 2017 is over. There are a couple of great movies set to be released from the biggest blockbusters to some high-minded fares vying for award recognition. We’ve put together a list of top 5 films you should plan to see in December 2017.

1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Release: 15th December 2017)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a must-watch in December 2017 if you love action-fantasy movies and the Star Wars film series. The movie is a follow-up of Rian Johnson’s first three films namely; Brick, The Brothers Bloom and Looper. The movie continues the ”Star Wars: The Force Awakens” storyline. The Last Jedi features many stars such as Daisy Ridley who plays a young girl with special powers. Ridley teams up with legendary actor, Mark Hamill to help her master her abilities. She wants to help her friends get through difficult periods. Meanwhile, the resistance is preparing to fight the First Order.

The Last Jedi features many other characters coming back such as; Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Lupita Nyong’o, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis and Gwendoline Christie. There are some new notable cast members as well such as Benicio Del Toro (Academy Award winner) and Laura Dern (Academy Award nominee). The Last Jedi is a mega-budget action fantasy film so brace yourself for some exciting 150 minutes of science fiction adventure.

2. Jumanji (Release: 20th December 2017)

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is also among the top December 2017 movies to look out for just before Christmas. This action-packed, adventure, comedy and family fantasy movie features renowned actors; Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black. The movie has been directed by Jake Kasdan, shot in Hawaii, United States in June 2016.

Jumanji is about four teenagers who discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game literally as adult avatars. What turns out to be fun at first transforms into a fight for survival. The teenagers must play Jumanji to survive! They must go on a dangerous adventure to beat the game or miss the chance to get back to the real world. The adventure involves making discoveries and changing how they think/view themselves, failure to which they risk being stuck forever.

3. Pitch Perfect 3 (Release: 22nd December 2017)

If you enjoy watching comedy-music films Pitch Perfect 3 is a must-watch this Christmas. The Bellas are back in Pitch Perfect 3 which is the next chapter of their beloved and successful series which has grossed over $400 million globally. After winning at the world championship, the Bellas split before reuniting again after realizing there are no job prospects for singers. They team up to take part in one last signing competition overseas but face serious challengers who use both voice and instruments. They must make some questionable decisions to win the overseas USO tour competition.

This Pitch Perfect sequel is the third and last installment of the Pitch Perfect Trilogy. The film features Anna Kendrick, Hailee Steinfeld, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Alexis Knapp, Anna Camp, Hana Mae lee, Chrissie Fit, Ester Dean, Kelley Jakle, Shelly Regner, Andy Allo, Guy Burnet, John Michael Higgins, Elizabeth Banks, John Lithgow, Ruby Rose and Matt Lanter.

4. Downsizing (Release: 22nd December 2017)

Matt Damon is back, this time with a comedy, drama and science fiction film dubbed Downsizing. The movie is a social satire which imagines ”downsizing” (shrinking people) as a solution to overpopulation among other problems in society today. The movie envisions a 200-year transition from big to small, i.e., where humans are shrunk to four inches tall.

According to the movie, people stand to gain a lot in a miniaturized world where money would go much further promising a better life for everyone. Matt Damon and his wife Kristen Wiig decide to leave their stress-filled lives in Omaha to ”get small” and move to a downsized community, a choice which triggers life-changing adventures. Matt Damon gets small but realizes his wife has backed out when it’s too late. Downsizing also stars Christoph Waltz and Jason Sudeikis. Spunky newcomer, Hong Chau steals the scenes with a terrific performance.

5. I, Tonya (Release: 8th December 2017)

There is a highly anticipated sports drama and biography movie to look out for as well in December 2017. I, Tonya features competitive ice skater, Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) who rises ranks at the United States Figure Skating Championships but faces challenges in the future when her ex-husband intervenes. The movie is highly anticipated according to Metacritic. I, Tonya has been written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie. The movie tells the story of ex-spouses Jeff Gillooly and Tonya Harding who hired someone to break Nancy Kerrigan’s leg (Harding’s competitor) at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championship. The incident ended Harding’s career as a figure skater.
